Sidama, nestled in the lush highlands surrounding Lake Awasa within Ethiopia’s Rift Valley, is famed for its extraordinary coffee-growing conditions. At elevations surpassing 2000 meters above sea level, the region’s cool climate allows coffee cherries to ripen slowly, developing intricate and nuanced flavor profiles that distinguish Sidama coffee from all others.
Rich with heritage, the area is home to around 8 million people across 36 diverse districts, each brimming with unique traditions, cultures, and coffee practices. Coffee farming here is an art form, stewarded by dedicated smallholder farmers and supported by over 50 cooperatives and more than 200 washing stations, collectively producing some of the highest-quality specialty Arabica coffees.
When savoring Sidama’s naturally processed coffee, expect a lively cup featuring bright notes of strawberry and star fruit intertwined with sweet undertones of cane sugar, floral elegance, and subtle hints of green tea, creating an experience as rich and diverse as the land itself.
